Astronomers Raise Alarm Over Satellite Constellation's Light Pollution

A recent investigation has shed light on the potential for substantial light pollution from the proposed sun-reflecting mirrors by Reflect Orbital, a U.S. startup. The research indicates that these mirrors, when operational, could illuminate areas on Earth to a brightness 40 times that of a full moon, effectively obscuring celestial observations for those within their beam. This transformation of the night sky into a constant twilight has raised alarms among the scientific community.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) previously granted Reflect Orbital permission for a demonstration satellite, EARENDIL-1, equipped with an 18-by-18-meter mirror. This pilot project aims to assess the feasibility of directing sunlight to Earth for extending solar power generation into nighttime hours and providing illumination for disaster-stricken areas. However, the prospect of Reflect Orbital deploying up to 40,000 even larger mirrors in the future has sparked considerable opposition from astronomers, environmental groups, and aviation professionals, who are concerned about the unforeseen ecological and observational consequences.

Leading the scientific critique, Gaspar Bakos, a Princeton University astrophysics professor and co-author of the recent study, emphasized that previous estimates of light pollution were conservative. His team's findings, rooted in decades of atmospheric light scattering research, demonstrate that these operational mirrors, measuring 54 by 54 meters, would render the night sky as bright as twilight, even at distances up to 34 kilometers from the beam's center due to atmospheric scattering. The cumulative effect of 400 such mirrors, which would be necessary to generate power for modern solar panels, would result in a sky glow visible from 80 kilometers away, effectively extending the twilight zone for many miles. This intensified artificial light, far exceeding typical urban light pollution, could profoundly alter ecosystems and human experiences of the night.
