Enea Bastianini recently showcased a remarkable resurgence at the Japanese Grand Prix, signifying a turning point after a challenging period. The Tech3 KTM racer demonstrated impressive skill, particularly in the latter stages of the race, nearly securing a third-place finish against Marco Bezzecchi. His performance was highlighted by four consecutive record-breaking race laps, underscoring his capability and determination on the track.
This exceptional display at Motegi was particularly notable as it was only the second instance this season where Bastianini surpassed Pedro Acosta as the leading KTM rider. The previous occasion was during the Spanish Grand Prix, where Bastianini's eighth-place finish proved superior to Acosta's. This achievement was especially gratifying for Bastianini, considering he had been demoted from a top-three position in the previous day's sprint race due to track limit violations. The Sunday race, however, brought a sense of accomplishment rather than frustration.
Bastianini expressed his satisfaction, stating, "I've been anticipating this moment for quite some time, to perform at this level, and today it materialized." His strong finish served as a powerful reminder of his excellent tire management abilities, a crucial asset even in races where tire degradation wasn't a primary concern. His comfort with the hard tire, which the field adopted after testing it in the Sunday morning warm-up, also played a significant role in his success.
According to Tech3 team manager Nicolas Goyon, the indications during warm-up were unmistakable. "Enea returned to the garage with a broad smile, conveying, 'Gentlemen, I have something special in store. This tire truly complements my riding style, and I believe I can deliver a powerful performance in the race.' And he certainly lived up to that promise," Goyon remarked to TNT Sports. He further elaborated, "We recognize Enea's strength in the latter half of a race; when he has everything under control, he is almost unstoppable." Bastianini is set to depart from Tech3 after the current season, transitioning to a Trackhouse Aprilia for the 2027 season.
Meanwhile, Bezzecchi, the factory Aprilia rider, also celebrated his ability to fend off Bastianini's intense late-race challenge. He admitted to grappling with various emotions throughout the weekend. "'Bestia' [Bastianini] was incredibly fast, and I was fiercely determined to secure this podium," Bezzecchi shared. "It was a tough week for me; I lost a very important individual just as I arrived in Japan, so this podium meant a great deal. I put in a lot of effort to achieve this, and I'm very pleased." Despite his podium finish, Bezzecchi has widened the gap to championship leaders Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez, making the title race appear increasingly to be a two-contender battle. Martin currently holds a two-point advantage over Marquez, with Bezzecchi trailing by 47 points in third place.
