In Bengaluru, Karnataka, a distinctive multi-generational residence known as the "House of Shadows" has been meticulously designed by the Indian firm Cadence Architects. This dwelling caters to a family of enthusiastic readers who have returned to India after spending fifteen years in the United States. Principal architect Smaran Mallesh revealed that the clients desired a home that would not only house their extensive book collection but also foster an environment conducive to reading, alongside accommodating the parents of the primary client.
The exterior of the house showcases a predominantly subdued material palette, featuring a basalt stone foundation and concrete walls, complemented by a slatted timber facade. This design choice aims to integrate the structure seamlessly with its natural surroundings, making it less conspicuous amidst the tree-lined street while ensuring privacy and filtering natural light and air. The thoughtful spatial arrangement within the House of Shadows addresses the diverse requirements of its three generations of occupants; the ground level hosts communal spaces like the kitchen, living, and dining areas, alongside private quarters for the grandparents.
Ascending to the first floor, a more secluded and contemplative atmosphere awaits, dedicated to the parents and children, complete with a study and several cozy reading retreats. This level is conceptualized as a quiet haven, promoting reflection and leisure. The topmost level is an entertainment hub for the younger generation and their friends, while various terraces, decks, and balconies throughout the home contribute to a naturally cool interior. The interior design cleverly contrasts the dark exterior with brighter hues, incorporating local materials like wood and lime plaster, although darker tones are selectively applied in intimate reading nooks to enhance their snug appeal, marrying modern design with a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship.
