Harvard's Startup Bootcamp Features AI Instructor Avatars

Instructions

Harvard Business School (HBS) is launching an innovative startup bootcamp, 'HBS Foundry,' leveraging artificial intelligence to expand its educational outreach. This eight-week program, priced at $699, integrates AI-powered avatars from the company HeyGen, which provide tailored feedback during critical entrepreneurial activities such as pitch rehearsals and mock board meetings. While participants still engage in live sessions with human instructors, the AI avatars are designed to offer continuous, personalized guidance, allowing for a scalable and interactive learning experience.

The development of the AI component initially aimed for a chatbot-like interaction. However, through user trials, students expressed a preference for a more structured and guided experience, leading to the current avatar-based system. A New York Times reporter, Sarah Kessler, personally evaluated the system by pitching a business concept to an AI replica of Flybridge Capital co-founder Jeff Bussgang. Despite both the actual Bussgang and his AI counterpart being unimpressed by her 'Uber for bananas' idea, Kessler noted the AI avatar's perpetually 'frozen smile' during her presentation. While some college students have voiced skepticism regarding AI in education, participants in the HBS Foundry program have generally reacted positively to the avatars. Bussgang himself, acknowledging the somewhat 'creepy' nature of his digital clone, ultimately stated that his students appreciate the tool.

This pioneering initiative at Harvard Business School highlights a significant shift in higher education towards embracing advanced technology to enhance learning and accessibility. By integrating AI avatars, HBS is not only expanding its pedagogical methods but also preparing future entrepreneurs for a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. This blend of traditional expertise with cutting-edge technology offers a glimpse into the future of specialized education, emphasizing personalized interaction and practical application in a dynamic environment.
