Josh Berry Recounts Las Vegas Practice Crash: A Tire Blowout at Low Speed

Instructions

This report details the significant tire-related incidents that occurred during the NASCAR Cup Series practice session at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, focusing on Josh Berry’s major crash and the broader implications for team strategies and race preparations.

Unfortunate Incidents Mar Las Vegas Practice

Concerns Over Tire Integrity and Track Conditions at Las Vegas

During the NASCAR Cup Series practice session at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, several teams encountered unexpected tire problems. These issues arose as competitors continued to experiment with tire air pressures, pushing the boundaries for optimal performance. Compounding the challenge was a notorious bump located in Turns 1 and 2 of the track, an area where vehicles frequently experience bottoming out, potentially contributing to tire stress.

High-Impact Crashes for Ford Drivers Berry and Gragson

Ultimately, two vehicles were involved in crashes within Turns 1 and 2. Both incidents involved Ford cars: the No. 4 Front Row Motorsports Ford driven by Noah Gragson and, more notably, the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford piloted by Josh Berry, who sustained a substantial impact.

Berry's Account of the Tire Failure and Frustration

Emerging from the medical center, Berry shared his perspective on the incident. "Yes, we definitely experienced a tire failure," he stated. "It felt like the left rear, but I'm not entirely certain which specific tire it was. Regardless, it was truly unfortunate. It's particularly disheartening for a tire to fail at such a relatively low speed. That's quite concerning. But, honestly, I don't have all the answers."

Immediate Solution: Addressing Air Pressure

When asked about potential remedies, Berry's response was direct and to the point: "Well, I suppose it means we need to increase the air pressure in our tires." This simple solution underscores the critical role of tire management in racing.

Widespread Tire Problems Beyond the Crashes

Noah Gragson also experienced a spin in the same section of the track, later confirming that his incident was also due to a tire issue. As a direct consequence of the damage, both Berry and Gragson were unable to participate in qualifying and will be relegated to starting Sunday's Cup race from the back of the field. Berry confirmed his team's decision to switch to a backup car for the main event. The practice session also saw at least three other reported tire issues involving drivers Tyler Reddick (No. 45 Toyota), Ty Gibbs (No. 54 Toyota), and Chris Buescher (No. 17 Ford). Interestingly, no Chevrolet drivers reported experiencing any tire problems during the session.
