Nestled in a serene residential area, the Patina House exemplifies an architectural approach centered on the theme of temporality. Rather than emphasizing static forms, the design by 182 DESIGN allows the inherent qualities of materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and daily use to shape the dwelling's evolving character. The house is enveloped in a thoughtfully composed stone exterior, designed to gracefully age and develop a natural patination as it interacts with the elements. Furthermore, a vibrant curtain of trailing greenery is meticulously integrated, fostering a 'living patina' that will progressively soften and enrich the structure’s aesthetic over time, ensuring a harmonious evolution with its natural environment.
Patina House: Architectural Emptiness and Natural Evolution in Erode
Completed in 2026, the Patina House, a striking residential project by 182 DESIGN, is situated in the tranquil residential district of Erode, India. This expansive 370-square-meter dwelling was envisioned by lead architect Lokesh PB as a profound exploration into the concept of time as a formative element in design. The architectural team, which included Nandhakumar and Sindhuja as part of the lead team, and Kaarvens Structural Consultancy providing structural engineering, intentionally steered away from overt formal expressions. Instead, they embraced a philosophy where the inherent qualities of selected materials, the precision of craftsmanship, and the daily interactions of inhabitants would collaboratively define the home's lived experience. The exterior is characterized by a robust stone envelope, engineered to gracefully endure the passage of time and the caprices of weather, thereby developing a rich, natural patination. Complementing this, an innovative feature involves a cascade of hanging plants that will mature into a 'living patina,' subtly softening the building’s contours and fostering a dynamic dialogue between the man-made and the organic. The interior spaces feature products from renowned manufacturers such as BoConcept, Dtale Modern, Obetee Rugs, and Vitra Bathrooms, enhancing the home's blend of natural aesthetics and modern comfort.
