Seven horses initially lined up at the gate, following the scratching of G T Five Hundred. From the outset, Western Whirl, breaking from post 5 with Fraser Aebly aboard, took the lead, establishing a brisk pace. However, Souped Up, positioned on the outside, never allowed Western Whirl to gain significant ground, persistently pressing the leader throughout the race.
