Architecture and design studio Space Popular has transformed a gallery space at the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, introducing a distinctive design that utilizes a colorful, gridded carpet to delineate its extensive collection.
Situated within the museum's long and narrow volume, the Collection Gallery serves as a permanent showcase for the Nieuwe Instituut's rich archives, encompassing both physical and digital artifacts related to the evolution of Dutch architecture. The gallery's interior, largely enveloped in soft furnishings, was meticulously crafted by Space Popular to provide an inviting and cozy atmosphere, starkly contrasting with the prevalent "bright minimalism" found in most contemporary galleries. This intentional departure aims to encourage visitors to linger longer, offering a more relaxed and immersive engagement with the exhibits. The studio emphasized that the subdued lighting and gentle color gradients are designed to foster a sense of tranquility, prompting visitors to unwind, sit, and appreciate the textures of the carpet and the warmth of the hues.
Collaborating with graphic designer Mariana Lobão, Space Popular ingeniously integrated the entire gallery layout into the digitally printed carpet's gridded pattern. This carpet features a precise 50 by 50 centimeter grid alongside color-coded sections, effectively dividing the collection into five thematic areas. This non-linear arrangement facilitates a multi-visitor approach, allowing for diverse interactions with the five thematic narratives developed by the curatorial team at the Nieuwe Instituut. Within each section, custom-made wooden podiums by Rob den Dulk are also color-coded and surfaced with carpet, supporting glass cases that house physical models from the collection. Additionally, other wooden cabinets in the space function as interactive screens, enhancing visitor engagement. A prominent 40-meter-long concrete wall flanks the exhibition, ingeniously serving as a projection surface. The studio highlighted that the carpet's all-encompassing geometry provides a harmonious structure, ensuring every podium and object aligns with the grid, thereby creating a cohesive and visually organized environment. This gallery by Space Popular is scheduled to remain open at the Nieuwe Instituut until May 2029, promising an evolving display that will adapt to contemporary events. Space Popular's previous projects include an impactful installation at the MAXXI museum in Rome, which reimagined Aldo Rossi's architectural theories through the lens of the metaverse.
This innovative design exemplifies how thoughtful spatial arrangements and unconventional material choices can profoundly influence the visitor experience, transforming a conventional gallery into a welcoming and stimulating environment. It underscores the potential for creativity in exhibition design to foster deeper connections between people and cultural heritage, ultimately enriching public engagement with art and architecture.
