Shane van Gisbergen once again demonstrated his superior skill on road courses, clinching a decisive victory at Sonoma Raceway in the Pit Boss/FoodMaxx 250. This win further solidifies his reputation as a dominant force in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series on such tracks, extending his impressive record to six career victories, all achieved on road or street circuits. His performance showcased strategic brilliance and unwavering control, securing a significant lead over his competitors.
The race, held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, saw van Gisbergen navigate the 1.99-mile, 11-turn road course with remarkable efficiency. Despite encountering lapped cars in the final stretch, the New Zealander maintained his composure, crossing the finish line a notable 1.324 seconds ahead of Connor Zilisch. Zilisch's journey to second place was particularly challenging, as he had to recover from the back of the field twice during the event, highlighting his resilience and the competitive nature of the race.
Van Gisbergen's dominance was evident from early on, as he led 66 of the 79 laps. A strategic short-pit during the second stage on Lap 43 allowed him to reclaim the lead after the stage break. From that point, he expertly managed his fuel consumption while preserving a comfortable gap over Zilisch. His ability to control the race, even as Zilisch attempted to close in during the final lap by taking advantage of traffic, underscored his mastery of the course and his vehicle.
In post-race comments, van Gisbergen expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, stating, "Luckily enough, I think I saved enough (fuel) early... What an amazing car, to lead like that. The car was so good the whole race. It's great to get another one for these guys." His celebratory rugby ball kick into the grandstands became a memorable moment for fans.
While van Gisbergen led for the majority of the race in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, Connor Zilisch's drive in the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet was equally compelling. Starting from the rear due to an unapproved tire adjustment, Zilisch systematically worked his way through the field. Despite facing a pass-through penalty for speeding on pit road, which dropped him to 33rd at the start of Stage 2, he climbed back to second place behind van Gisbergen by Lap 35 and even won a stage after van Gisbergen pitted.
The race featured eight lead changes among six drivers and four caution periods, totaling 11 laps. The final stage proceeded without any cautions for 30 laps, setting the stage for van Gisbergen's uncontested finish. Brent Crews secured third place, earning valuable points and moving into a Chase-eligible position. Viking Motorsports also celebrated a strong day with Anthony Alfredo and Parker Retzlaff finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. The next O'Reilly Series race is scheduled for July 4 at Chicagoland Speedway.
