Angelus Revives Historic Tinkler 1958 Quarter Repeater

Instructions

Angelus has resurrected a horological marvel with the re-edition of its Tinkler 1958 Quarter Repeater. This limited-edition timepiece, unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2026, revives the brand's pioneering spirit from the mid-20th century. The original Tinkler was a rare and innovative automatic, waterproof quarter repeater, and this new yellow gold version, limited to just 15 pieces, continues its legacy of engaging both sight and sound for discerning collectors.

Angelus Tinkler 1958 Quarter Repeater: A Timeless Revival

Founded in 1891 by the Stolz brothers in Le Locle, Switzerland, Angelus quickly established itself through groundbreaking chronograph and repeater movements. The 1958 Tinkler marked a significant achievement as the world's first automatic, waterproof quarter repeater wristwatch, featuring a repetition module crafted by Alfred Louis Golay. Despite its innovation, the complexity and cost of combining these features led to only 100 units being produced, making the original a highly sought-after collector's item. The reissue maintains the subtle sophistication of its predecessor. The new Tinkler 1958 Gold, with its 38mm yellow gold case, exudes a classic 1950s aesthetic. Its clean lines, straight lugs, and polished finishes offer an understated elegance. While its 12mm thickness is notable for a dress watch due to the integrated complication, it is well-proportioned by its compact diameter, ensuring a comfortable fit as demonstrated on Robin's 18.5cm wrist. A modern rectangular trigger now activates the repeater mechanism, replacing the original pump-style pusher. The screw-down caseback, crucial for its 30m water resistance, features an embossed 'A' framing a star and doubles as a soundboard for the chimes. The quarter repeater sequence involves a low-pitched strike for each hour, followed by double strikes for each 15-minute interval. While not as precise as a minute repeater, three double-strike sequences for the quarters provide a closer approximation of the time. The energy for the chiming function is self-contained within the pusher mechanism, preventing any drain on the movement's robust 70-hour power reserve. The dial of the Tinkler 1958 is a visual masterpiece, set against a domed white sunburst background. It features unique golden indices that capture the distinctive design sensibilities of the late 1950s. A golden Arabic numeral at 12 o'clock is complemented by arrow-shaped markers and "exclamation-shaped" indices at the primary quarter repeater positions. The intricate arrow markers reveal a hollowed, faceted tip and an indented base, subtly forming an 'A' silhouette. The exclamation marks are equally detailed, resembling a central skyscraper flanked by two smaller structures. Sharp, faceted golden hands track the time, all protected by a retro-inspired box sapphire crystal. Powering this exquisite timepiece is the new Angelus A600 movement, an in-house automatic caliber integrated with a specialized chiming module developed in collaboration with Dubois-Dépraz. Operating at 4Hz and offering a substantial 70-hour power reserve, the movement's intricate high-end decorations, though executed in-house, remain concealed beneath the caseback. This gold edition is completed with an inky blue alligator strap and an 18k yellow gold pin buckle, priced at CHF 56,300 (including tax).

The reintroduction of the Angelus Tinkler 1958 Quarter Repeater underscores the enduring appeal of traditional watchmaking skills and historical designs. In an era dominated by digital advancements, the Tinkler reminds us of the profound beauty in mechanical complexity and the tactile experience of time-telling. It serves as a testament to Angelus's legacy of innovation and craftsmanship, proving that some innovations, even if ahead of their time, can find their true appreciation decades later. For enthusiasts, it's a chance to connect with a unique piece of horological heritage that continues to resonate with its charm and ingenuity.
