Auburn Tigers Boost Roster with Key Infield Transfer
Ben Swails' Journey: From Hawkeye to Tiger
Ben Swails, a seasoned infielder, has officially committed to joining the Auburn Tigers baseball program. His collegiate career spans four seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes, and he is now set to utilize his final year of NCAA eligibility with Auburn. Swails' tenure at Iowa saw a consistent upward trend in his on-field contributions.
Consistent Growth and Performance Milestones
After redshirting in 2023 and playing a limited role in 2024, Swails secured a starting position in 2025. His performance peaked in the 2026 season, despite being hampered by injuries that restricted him to 30 starts across 43 games. During this period, he achieved remarkable career highs, showcasing his potential for even greater success if he had played a full season.
A Standout 2026 Season: Offensive Prowess
In his impressive 2026 campaign, Swails boasted a batting average of .343, along with five home runs and nine doubles. He maintained a strong on-base percentage of .444 and an excellent slugging percentage of .590. His offensive contributions included 18 runs batted in (RBI) and 34 runs scored, complemented by 15 walks against 28 strikeouts. Notably, his on-base plus slugging (OPS) reached 1.034, a career best by nearly 200 points.
Defensive Reliability and Base Running Acumen
Beyond his offensive capabilities, Swails is recognized for his defensive consistency, committing only four errors throughout his career, which translates to an impressive .976 fielding percentage. Although not a frequent base stealer, he has been highly efficient when attempting to steal, successfully converting 19 out of 22 opportunities.
Previous Contributions and Auburn's Recruitment Strategy
Prior to his breakout year, Swails became a regular starter for Iowa in 2025, where he played 41 games and started 35, hitting .307. That season, he recorded two doubles, nine home runs, 14 RBI, and 29 runs, achieving a .406 on-base percentage and a .429 slugging percentage. Swails is Auburn's third transfer acquisition this offseason and the second position player, joining outfielder John Beverley and relief pitcher Zach Stevens, with more additions anticipated.
