This involves combining robust endurance training with specialized hill repeats and dedicated gym sessions focused on developing muscular power. She emphasizes that the unique gradient of mountains like those in the Alps and Dolomites necessitates a tailored training regimen. Hasman generously shares several of her preferred hill-training techniques to help adventurers achieve peak performance.

The foundational step in this training philosophy is establishing a strong endurance base. Hasman advises identifying the longest possible hill or utilizing a treadmill set to maximum incline. The goal is to maintain a consistent climbing pace for one to two hours. Initially, it's beneficial to incorporate a moderate amount of weight, starting with approximately 10 percent of your body weight and hiking for 60 minutes. Gradually, an additional 15 minutes should be added to the duration each week. This progressive overload helps build sustained strength and stamina. Additionally, gradually increasing the carried weight by about 5 pounds weekly, up to a maximum of 20 percent of your body weight, is recommended. Exceeding this threshold can increase the risk of injury while providing diminishing returns in strength gains. Crucially, avoid increasing both weight and distance simultaneously in the same week; focus on one variable at a time. Throughout these endurance sessions, maintain a conversational pace, meaning you should be able to speak three sentences without gasping for breath, indicating an engaged yet sustainable effort.

Once a solid endurance foundation is established – typically after reliably hiking uphill for 90 to 120 minutes with 15 to 20 percent of body weight – the focus shifts to developing speed and power through uphill repeats. Locate a steep incline and sprint up it at near maximum effort for 10 seconds, then slowly walk back down to the starting point before repeating. The initial target is four repetitions. Over time, progressively increase the duration of these efforts to 30 seconds, then 60 seconds, and eventually to two or three minutes. If a sufficiently long hill isn't available, a treadmill at maximum incline can serve as an effective substitute.

Recognizing that proficient uphill performance often correlates with downhill prowess, Hasman also stresses the importance of training for descents. Long descents, especially with a weighted pack, can be particularly demanding on the quadriceps. To prevent exhaustion and muscle fatigue, specific downhill training is advised. This can be achieved by reversing the uphill repeat method: walk slowly up the hill, then rapidly descend while maintaining control, completing four repetitions. Alternatively, combine both elements by rapidly ascending and descending, taking rest periods only at the bottom of the hill. Incorporating wall sits, despite their challenging nature, is also a highly effective method for strengthening the muscles used in downhill hiking. Starting with one-minute holds a couple of times a week, gradually increase the duration until failure, then add weight, and eventually progress to single-leg wall sits for an advanced challenge.

For building single-leg strength and stability crucial for uphill movement, gym-based exercises are indispensable. Hasman recommends at least two gym sessions per week during intensive training periods, focusing on glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and core muscles. Perform 15 to 30 repetitions on each leg for three sets, progressively increasing sets or adding 5 pounds of weight weekly.
