The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew have long been at the forefront of environmental stewardship, and their Wakehurst estate in West Sussex is currently home to an innovative botanical experiment. This initiative operates on the understanding that numerous herbaceous species, encompassing both annuals and perennials, may struggle to survive as global temperatures rise and prolonged dry spells become more frequent. These plants often fail to access adequate moisture when their root systems cannot penetrate to deeper, water-rich soil layers, hindering their growth, flowering, and seed production. Given their crucial role in carbon sequestration and soil enhancement, their survival is paramount. By analyzing global climate patterns, researchers identified North America, particularly the United States, as a rich source of plant life adapted to hotter and drier conditions, with many species already favored by British gardeners.
Sourcing Seeds: A Transatlantic Botanical Expedition
In 2019, a dedicated team of botanists and horticulturists from Kew Wakehurst embarked on a journey to North America to gather seeds from wild prairie landscapes. These prairies represent some of the planet's most critically endangered plant communities, with intensive agricultural practices having reduced their diverse ecosystems to a mere one percent of their original extent. The team successfully returned with millions of seeds, acquired both from established botanical institutions and through wild collection efforts, which were subsequently deposited in the Millennium Seed Bank. The following year, a carefully selected assortment of these seeds was broadcast-sown across a newly designated six-acre expanse, now famously known as the American Prairie.
From Seed to Bloom: The Prairie's Progressive Establishment
A portion of the collected seeds was meticulously nurtured by Wakehurst's propagation specialists, undergoing germination and pricking out to produce 50,000 young plants for planting in 2021. That year also marked the initial blooming of early-sown seeds from 2020, featuring ephemeral, pioneering perennials such as Coreopsis and Rudbeckia, although not all broadcast species had thrived equally. Each subsequent year sees more plants prepared, steadily increasing the variety of species. By 2024, over 50 distinct species were either well-established or in the process of doing so, with 11 new ones, including wild indigo (Baptisia alba) and American bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), flowering for the first time. The following year brought further additions, as prairie plantain (Arnoglossum plantagineum) and fork-toothed ookow (Dichelostemma congestum) also began to display their blooms.
Curating Diversity: Tailoring Prairie Habitats
The indigenous wildflower species of North America exhibit significant regional variation. Rather than indiscriminately mixing all seeds, Wakehurst's gardening experts have focused on creating specific combinations that mirror natural ecosystems. Their South-Central Prairie, for instance, showcases purple Allium cernuum and a delicate prairie grass known as Sporobolus heterolepis, both already familiar in English gardens. It also features the less common feverfew Parthenium integrifolium and another grass, Andropogon gerardii, which annually reaches heights exceeding seven feet.
Familiar Faces: Atlantic Coastal Prairie Varieties
Species originating from the Atlantic Coastal zone of North America tend to be more recognizable to British observers. This includes a blend of asters, commonly referred to as Michaelmas daisies, alongside goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis), sunflowers (Helianthus occidentalis), and the white-flowered Eupatorium hyssopfolium, celebrated for its effectiveness in attracting pollinating insects.
Challenges and Adaptations: Nurturing a Resilient Ecosystem
Some species still require careful attention to become fully established within Wakehurst's specific growing conditions, and a few may ultimately fail to thrive due to competition. The botanical team continuously introduces new species and devises novel plant combinations. They have also initiated trials for end-of-season maintenance techniques, opting for mowing and raking instead of the wild practice of burning, to assess its impact on promoting or suppressing biodiversity. Concurrently, gardeners are diligently working to control native weeds; even our common spotted orchid, Dactylorhiza fuchsii, spread widely among the American plants during the early stages of the experiment. As a prairie garden, mulching and irrigation are explicitly avoided. The emphasis is on low maintenance, with the ultimate goal of fostering self-sustaining plant communities that also possess significant ornamental value.
Success Stories: Eryngium yuccaefolium's Flourishing Performance
Only a select few prairie species have undergone horticultural refinement. One notable triumph at Wakehurst is Eryngium yuccifolium, a visually striking and robust perennial that achieves heights of five to six feet and consistently flowers from late June onward. This plant has successfully weathered recent summers, flourishing due to its ability to send roots deep into the soil in search of moisture. However, it presents a minor aesthetic disappointment within the new prairie, as its entire structure remains green and white. Its appeal would be significantly enhanced if its blooms adopted a blue hue, akin to many other Eryngium varieties.
Beyond Aesthetics: Ecological Insights from Prairie Plants
Effective scientific investigations often serve multiple objectives. Many North American prairie plants are invaluable to pollinators, nectar-feeding insects, and other wildlife. Wakehurst utilizes its evolving landscapes to research the potential of various bees, wasps, and hoverflies—species that frequent these non-native plants—as pollinators for commercially important crops. Nevertheless, introducing non-native species to the UK always carries inherent risks. An initial study focused on assessing the potential invasiveness of prairie species by quantifying their 'seed rain'.
Unanswered Questions: The Path Ahead for Prairie Adaptation
Significant questions still await resolution. Can short-lived species successfully integrate into English climatic conditions? Will they persist within a plant community designed to be perennial, self-sufficient, and balanced? To what extent can the precise ecological balance observed in America itself be replicated?
