San Francisco's distinctive weather, often characterized by its pervasive fog, has long been a muse for artists and writers. This local phenomenon even has its own affectionate nickname, "Karl," with a dedicated social media presence. Embracing this regional characteristic, artist Fujiko Nakaya unveiled "Fog Bridge #72494" in 2013. This installation periodically envelops a bridge connecting the museum's two piers in a misty embrace. The fog is generated by pumping water at high pressure through over 800 nozzles. Demonstrating adaptability and resourcefulness, the exhibit was reconfigured in 2014, amidst a severe drought, to operate using desalinated Bay water, ensuring its continued presence as a cherished and ever-evolving display.

"Probably Chelsea": Art and Science Intersecting with DNA Forensics

In 2014, the Exploratorium hosted artist-in-residence Heather Dewey-Hagborg, whose groundbreaking work "Stranger Visions" explored the creation of facial profiles from DNA sequences. Commissioned by PAPER Magazine, Dewey-Hagborg applied her innovative technique to create portraits of whistleblower Chelsea Manning, who was then incarcerated. Manning's limited communication through mail provided the unique challenge for this project. Through detailed explanations, Dewey-Hagborg elucidated her process, from learning DNA sequencing at Genspace to utilizing custom algorithms and 3D printing to generate human-scale masks. The resulting series, "Probably Chelsea," featured 20 possible portraits and was showcased within the museum's "Cells to Self" collection, which delves into the remarkable diversity and functions of cellular life.

The Hindes Prototyping Event: Fostering Rapid Innovation and Creative Problem-Solving

Embracing a spirit of rapid innovation, the Exploratorium annually hosts the Hindes Prototyping Event, an intensive, hackathon-style gathering. This event empowers a select group of ten to twelve museum participants, providing them with a budget of $300 and a mere three days to transform their most imaginative and unconventional exhibit concepts into tangible prototypes.
