Google Unveils New Gemini Models, Flagship Pro Version Absent

Google DeepMind recently introduced three new AI models to its Gemini family: Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber. Gemini 3.6 Flash stands out as a robust model offering enhanced capabilities in coding, knowledge processing, and multimodal functionalities. It also boasts a significant reduction in token usage by up to 17%, making it a more economical option than its predecessor, 3.5 Flash. This specialized cyber model will be made available exclusively to governmental bodies and trusted partners through a restricted access pilot program.

However, a notable aspect of this launch is the continued absence of the highly anticipated update to Google’s flagship model, Gemini Pro, which last received an update in February. This omission sparks further discussions regarding Google's overarching AI development strategy, especially in light of aggressive advancements from competitors. Since Google's last Gemini Pro update, rivals such as OpenAI have introduced GPT-5.5 and are rolling out GPT-5.6, while Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 4.8 and Claude Sonnet 5, and expanded access to its frontier Fable 5 model, underscoring the rapid pace of innovation in the AI sector.

Google had previously hinted at the release of Gemini Pro as part of the 3.5 Flash update in May, stating that the Pro version was already undergoing internal use and would be launched the following month. Recent reports, however, suggest that Google is encountering internal delays with the 3.5 Pro launch, struggling to meet its performance benchmarks. Historically, Gemini Pro models have represented Google’s most advanced offerings for intricate reasoning and coding tasks, whereas the Flash models are designed to prioritize cost-effectiveness and faster response times, making them ideal for production-level applications. Logan Kilpatrick, Google DeepMind’s product lead, affirmed that Gemini 3.5 Pro is currently undergoing testing with partners, with hopes for an imminent release. Additionally, he revealed that the team has commenced its most ambitious pre-training phase yet for the upcoming Gemini 4.
