Magnitude, a formidable four-year-old bay, executed a brisk five-furlong workout in 1:00.20 on the Oklahoma dirt track. This impressive training session is part of his meticulous preparation for Saratoga's 1 1/8-mile, Grade 1, $1 million Whitney Stakes, scheduled for August 8. The Whitney Stakes is a 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Classic in October at Keeneland. Trained by the esteemed Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen for Winchell Thoroughbreds, Magnitude's breeze with jockey Jose Ortiz aboard, alongside Grade 2 winner Tiztastic, was met with high praise from Asmussen, who expressed immense satisfaction with the horse's condition and the ideal morning track conditions.
Magnitude's Unprecedented Season and Career Overview
Magnitude has enjoyed an exceptional year, boasting a perfect 3-for-3 record as a four-year-old and accumulating over $8.3 million in earnings. His remarkable 2026 campaign began with a victory in the Razorback Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park in February. He then triumphed in the Dubai World Cup (G1) the following month and secured another win in the Stephen Foster (G1) at Churchill Downs on June 27. With an overall record of 8 wins, 2 seconds, and 1 third from 14 starts, and total earnings exceeding $9.6 million, Magnitude's only prior appearance at the Spa resulted in a third-place finish in last year's Travers (G1), a race ultimately won by the subsequent Horse of the Year, Sovereignty.
Sovereignty and Baeza Fine-Tune Their Whitney Ambitions
Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott also oversaw the Saturday workouts of reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty and Grade 1 winner Baeza on the Oklahoma dirt track, as they too prepare for the Whitney Stakes. Godolphin’s Kentucky homebred, Sovereignty, with assistant trainer Neil Poznansky in the saddle, completed five furlongs in 1:01 flat. Mott expressed satisfaction with Sovereignty's performance, noting his strong cruising ability. Sovereignty, the victor of last year's Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers, has had two starts this year, finishing second in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in April and third in the Stephen Foster (G1). Baeza, representing C R K Stable and Grandview Equine, also clocked five furlongs in 1:01.2, training alongside the unraced three-year-old Veblen. Mott described Baeza's work as "very good, very sharp," emphasizing his readiness for the upcoming challenge.
Baeza's Resilient Performances and Whitney Outlook
Baeza has shown remarkable resilience in his two outings under Mott's guidance this year, particularly after the passing of his former trainer, John Shirreffs. In his seasonal debut at the Alysheba (G2) in May, despite a hesitant start, he rallied to finish third, narrowly missing the top two. In his last race, the Stephen Foster, Baeza faced another challenging start, breaking belatedly and finding himself at the back of the field. However, he unleashed an impressive six-wide rally to secure second place, 1 1/4 lengths behind Magnitude. Both Baeza and Sovereignty are set to challenge Magnitude once again in the highly anticipated Whitney Stakes, promising a thrilling contest among these elite competitors.
